Radiation Therapy Services Announces Michael Steinberg, M.D. And Paul Wallner, D.O. Selected to Become Fellows of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology

FORT MYERS, Fla., Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Radiation Therapy Services, Inc. , a leading operator of radiation therapy centers, announced today that Senior Vice Presidents Michael Steinberg, M.D. and Paul Wallner, D.O., have been selected to become Fellows of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). Drs. Steinberg and Wallner will receive their FASTRO designation on November 5 at a special ceremony during the Society's 48th Annual Meeting scheduled for November 5-9, 2006 in Philadelphia.
Dr. Steinberg is the Chair of the Health Policy Council for ASTRO and sits on its Board of Directors. Dr. Steinberg is ASTRO's representative to the American Medical Association's (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel, which defines the nomenclature for medical procedures. He has been instrumental in providing meaningful input into critical health policy and economic issues on behalf of patients and the specialty through his various leadership positions in radiation oncology. In addition to his leadership roles in healthcare economics, Dr. Steinberg serves as the Principle Investigator of a National Cancer Institute sponsored project to improve outcomes in medically underserved patients. He currently also serves as the ASTRO representative to the American Medical Association's (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel and on the ASTRO Board of Directors.
Dr. Wallner was the first and only member of ASTRO to sit on the AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value System Update Committee (RUC) and the first ASTRO member to sit on the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services Ambulatory Payment Classification Advisory Committee providing recommendations on hospital outpatient reimbursement codes, levels of reimbursement for hospital-based technical services and new technology utilization. He also served as the ASTRO representative to the AMA CPT Editorial Panel. Dr. Wallner was previously a member of the ASTRO Board of Directors and the American College of Radiology (ACR) Board of Chancellors. He is currently a member of the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) Board of Chancellors. He is also a recipient of ASTRO's Gold Medal, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a member of the Society.

Members of ASTRO are eligible to become a Fellow after 20 years of membership, serving in a leadership role for the organization and have making a significant contribution to the field of radiation oncology. The primary pathways to becoming a Fellow are research, patient care, education and leadership/service. The Society values contributions to all four areas, however, each nominee needs to have a "truly outstanding" contribution to at least one of the pathways to be named a Fellow.
