New Women's Health Survey Sheds Light on Perceptions, Progress in Treatment of Menopause - Video Available

STAMFORD, Conn., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- A new survey found that nearly 60 percent of women between the ages of 45 and 65 aren't being treated for the symptoms associated with menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, sleeplessness and irritability. The survey also found that nearly 90 percent of women are aware of over-the-counter treatments but only 35 percent feel comfortable talking to their doctor about them. The survey of more than 1,000 women was conducted in August by Esearch.com and sponsored by Novogen, Inc., the world leader in isoflavone research.

Lila Nachtigall, MD, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University's School of Medicine, believes the survey results demonstrate a need for increased dialogue between women and their healthcare professionals because not all alternative products are created equal and/or clinically tested for either effectiveness or safety.
"Women are really aware of the non-prescription alternatives -- that's what we saw in the survey -- however they don't discuss them with their healthcare professional so they don't take them," said Nachtigall. "Women really are suffering unnecessarily because there are safe, effective non- prescription items available to them such as Promensil."
Promensil, which is manufactured by Novogen, Inc., is derived from isoflavones found in the red clover plant. It has been clinically proven to reduce the number and severity of hot flashes as well as to promote long-term bone, breast and cardiovascular health.
Nachtigall was the lead author of a study published in the April issue of the Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology of Canada, which suggests an algorithmic approach be taken by healthcare professionals and their patients in treating the symptoms of menopause. Along with lifestyle changes, the Algorithm suggests that natural over-the-counter treatments, like Promensil, should be among the first lines of defense for some women. This represents the first time that scientists have agreed that natural alternatives should be an integral part of the treatment of menopausal symptoms.
Nachtigall suggests women talk to their physician or nurse practitioner about what over-the-counter products are safe and effective, because taking proper treatment, combined with a healthy diet and exercise can mean an end for many women to the uncomfortable symptoms associated with menopause.
