Omaha Physician Elected Secretary-Treasurer of College of American Pathologists

NORTHFIELD, Ill., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Gene N. Herbek, MD, FCAP, of Omaha, Neb., was sworn in as Secretary-Treasurer of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) at a ceremony held at CAP '06 -- the College's annual meeting -- in San Diego on Sept. 9, 2006. Dr. Herbek previously served on the College's Board of Governors from 1998 to 2004.

Throughout his career, Dr. Herbek has been actively involved in the CAP. He currently serves as a section editor of "Residents Affairs," in the College's peer-reviewed journal, the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. In addition, Dr. Herbek is a member of the Practice Management Committee and is an advisor to the Residents Forum Executive Committee. Previously, he was chair of the CAP Council of Public Affairs, the CAP Council on Membership and Public Affairs, and the Ad Hoc Committee on Tissue and Organ Procurement and Distribution, as well as the vice-chair of the CAP Council on Scientific Affairs.
At the College's annual meeting in 2005, Dr. Herbek received the CAP William H. Kuehn, PhD., Outstanding Communicator Award for his efforts to raise public awareness about the role that pathologists play in both determining the cause of illness and in the preventive health care available to patients. He was also awarded the CAP President's Honors Award in 2001 and 2004. In addition, Dr. Herbek was recognized at the College's annual meeting in 2004 for his outstanding efforts, dedication, vision, and support of the CAP Foundation's Humanitarian Grant Program. This program provides grants to members of the College to fund pathology and medical services to under- privileged patients in underdeveloped areas of the world. He is a past recipient of the CAP Foundation's Lansky Award.
In addition to his membership with the CAP, Dr. Herbek is a member of the American Pathology Foundation, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and American Medical Association. He holds membership with the Nebraska Medical Association, Nebraska Association of Pathologists, Iowa Association of Pathologists, American Association of Blood Banks, California Society of Pathologists, Florida Society of Pathologists, and Texas Society of Pathologists.
Currently, Dr. Herbek is a pathologist at The Pathology Center at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb. He also serves as a deputy medical examiner for the state of Iowa and as a consulting pathologist for several hospitals in Iowa and Nebraska.
Dr. Herbek received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He completed his residency in both anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Herbek is certified by the American Board of Pathology in both anatomic and clinical pathology and holds licensures in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota.
