"Terry Belmont's exceptional career as an executive for some of the best known hospitals, health systems and health care associations will help ensure our outstanding facilities continue their leadership role among America's best hospitals and that our communities have access to the highest quality of care available," says Barry Arbuckle, PhD, President and CEO of MemorialCare Medical Centers, a six-hospital system in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Belmont replaces interim CEO Tammie Brailsford, who will return to her position as senior vice president of MemorialCare Medical Centers when Belmont begins his new post in early November.

The 743-bed Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children's Hospital, with 5,247 employees, 1,350 medical staff members and annual budget of $736 million, is a teaching hospital affiliated with several leading colleges and universities. It is one of a few campuses nationally with separate adult and children's hospitals and these nationally recognized centers -- MemorialCare Center for Women, Todd Cancer Institute, Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute, Emergency-Trauma Center, Orthopedics-Rehabilitation- Neurology Center and other Centers of Excellence. The Memorial Medical Center Foundation that philanthropically supports Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children's has $150 million in total assets.

"Terry Belmont joins us at an important time in our history, with a substantial building and expansion project for Miller Children's and other key programs, including new groundbreaking clinical services and medical technologies, launch of the electronic health record system and the 100th anniversary of Long Beach Memorial in 2007," adds Arbuckle. "His experience and expertise will certainly make a difference to our medical staff, employees, boards and volunteers as we pursue these new initiatives."

Belmont's career includes titles of President and Chief Executive Officer of several California entities, including St. Joseph Hospital of Orange, Pacific Health Resources, California Hospital Medical Center, HealthForward and others. He served as Chair of Healthcare Association of Southern California and Health Care Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties. A member of the PacifiCare board for several years, he also served on the California Healthcare Association board and executive committee.

Since 1999, Belmont has been a Senior Vice President at Kaiser Permanente, first in the San Diego Region; and since 2003, the Inland Empire Region. The Inland Empire Region alone serves 680,000 members and includes more than 700 physicians and 7,900 employees.

Belmont's contributions to the community are substantial. These include Vice President of the Orange County World Affairs Council and service on the boards of the Southern California College of Optometry, American Heart Association and Children's Fund. He received his master's degree in public health with a major in hospital administration from University of California, Berkeley, and his bachelor's degree in business from University of Redlands.

Belmont was selected following a nine-month national search led by a search committee representing Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children's governance boards, medical leadership, employees and executive management, according to Arbuckle.
