MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Target will make a charitable donation of $300,000 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) this October. A sizable portion of this contribution will directly benefit and support the research of James N. Ingle, MD, head of breast cancer translational research at the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Ingle's research program focuses on innovative new treatments for breast cancer, including endocrine therapy, immunotherapy and gene therapy as well as studies examining genes and pathways related to breast cancer. Dr. Ingle's ground-breaking studies are paving the way for meaningful advancements in the understanding and treatment of breast cancer.
"The treatment and prevention of breast cancer is an area of concern for Target guests," said Laysha Ward, vice president of community relations at Target. "Target is pleased to help affect change at this core research level by supporting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and innovative research programs."
"Corporate support of breast cancer research is critical to finding a cure. So, we're delighted that Target remains a committed, long-term partner for the Foundation," said Myra J. Biblowit, president of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. "By earmarking Target's contribution to Dr. Ingle at the Mayo Clinic, we have the rare experience to see how significant support of a specific initiative may lead to tangible, real world results and save lives."
This is the third consecutive year that Target has partnered with BCRF to generate funds and awareness in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Target was the first mass retailer to create an exclusive collection of pink products to benefit breast cancer research. In 2004 and 2005, Target debuted distinct pink product collections from which 100 percent of the total net profits benefited BCRF.
In addition to the pink product collections, Target hosted a temporary, "pop-up" store in Times Square that sold the pink product collection in 2004. In 2005, Target sponsored a free concert with multi-platinum artist Pink in New York City to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month. Over the past two years, Target has donated more than two million dollars to BCRF generated from guest purchases and support of the collections.
This year, Target will be carrying select pink products from a variety of companies that benefit BCRF. Target guests can show their support by purchasing items such as the Dyson DC07 pink vacuum cleaner and a range of products from Wilson Sports Goods, including HOPE golf balls, tennis rackets and tennis balls.
In addition, Target has also partnered with Play for P.I.N.K., a not-for-profit grassroots charity dedicated to raising funds for BCRF through golf, tennis and other sporting events across the country. Select Target items will be sold at these tournaments.

About The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and genetic research. The Foundation supports scientists at leading medical centers worldwide whose research is focused on achieving prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. A minimum of 85 cents of each dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to breast cancer research and awareness programs. In October 2005, $22 million was awarded to 110 researchers across the U.S. and in Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Israel. Money magazine named BCRF one of America's eight top charities. The Foundation has received the highest rating from Charity Navigator, four stars, for four consecutive years, which means BCRF has outperformed most other charities in America in efficiently managing its finances.
