National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition to Host 25th Anniversary Congressional Briefing

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- To mark its 25th Anniversary, the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition is hosting "Promoting the Best from the Beginning: A Congressional Briefing on the Status of Child and Family Health," to be held on October 4th in the Rayburn Building, room B354 from 9:00-10:00AM.
In addition to celebrating this milestone anniversary for the Coalition, a panel of experts will discuss and take questions on the following critical child and family health issues:
Immunization
Given the lifesaving benefits of immunization for individuals of all ages, the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition has a strong commitment to ensuring that all children receive the benefits of vaccines. Dr. Duane Alexander, Director of the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development pointed to this concern recently stating that, "Immunization in general has made a dramatic, remarkable impact on health in our lifetime. It's hard to believe when you think about how inexpensive vaccines are compared to the cost savings and the true value of health, which of course can't be quantified." Dr. Alexander will provide remarks related to immunization efforts.
Child Passenger Safety
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Car crashes are the leading killer of children under the age of 14 in the United States. Marilena Amoni, Associate Administrator for Program Development and Deliver, Traffic Injury Control Program for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will join the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition and speak efforts to reverse this threat to our nation's children.
Postpartum Depression
Cynthia Wainscott, Immediate Past Chair, National Mental Health Association will speak about the importance for health professionals and the public to understand that mental health is key to the health of mothers, babies and families. Some estimates indicate that 15 to 20 percent of new mothers experience postpartum depression, making it the number one complication of childbirth. For this reason, the Coalition is focused on making every effort to screen for and address the issues surrounding this issue.
