Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Offers Resources on National Depression Screening Day

Posted on: Wednesday, 4 October 2006, 18:00 CDT

CHICAGO, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of Americans will turn out tomorrow for National Depression Screening Day. Depression is an illness that leaves many people confused and unsure of where to turn. The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is a resource for the newly diagnosed, their family and friends.

Mood disorders affect approximately 21 million Americans each year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. DBSA offers over 400 chapters nationwide which provide 1,000 support groups and a variety of other services, including educational trainings, lending libraries and recovery- based initiatives.

"If you or someone you know has recently received a depression diagnosis, please contact us," said the director of Chapter Relations at the National DBSA office, Ingrid Deetz. "Our peer-led support groups provide the kind of sharing and caring that is crucial for a lifetime of wellness. Those who are newly diagnosed will benefit from talking with others about the illness, will learn tips on how to communicate with their doctors and loved ones, and will receive the hope, help and support they need to achieve recovery."

Cheryl Murphy, president of the DBSA Greater Nevada chapter explained what it means to be a member of a group of people who are all living with the same diagnosis. "It makes you feel connected," Murphy said. "It shows you that you're not all alone and that there's someone else who has been where you've been. It gives you the hope that you need."

To locate a support group in your area, learn about treatment options or get help finding a doctor, contact DBSA at (800) 826-3632 or go to http://www.dbsalliance.org/ .

understanding about the impact and management of these life-threatening illnesses by providing up-to-date, scientifically based tools and information.

Assisted by a 65-member scientific advisory board comprised of the leading researchers and clinicians in the field of mood disorders, DBSA supports
