American Society of Pain Educators Announces Partnership for PAINWeek(TM) 2007

Posted on: Thursday, 5 October 2006, 06:00 CDT

MONTCLAIR, N.J., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Society of Pain Educators (ASPE) will become a Founding Partner for PAINWeek 2007.

"With nearly half of all visits to primary care being pain related, the time has come to make relevant pain management education available for those who are treating the majority of patients dealing with pain," said B. Eliot Cole, MD, MPA, Executive Director of the American Society of Pain Educators. "The unique differentiator here will be the presence of primary care organizations as well as respective pain organizations contributing their collective knowledge resources to those who need it most [primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists]." Joining the ASPE as a Founding Partner will be the Western Pain Society. Additional medical societies and patient advocacy groups are expected to confirm their status as Founding Partners of PAINWeek by the end of this year. "The Western Pain Society is excited about cooperating with the American Society of Pain Educators in sponsoring this excellent program on pain management," said Bill H. McCarberg, MD, President of the Western Pain Society.

PAINWeek 2007 will be the first meeting open to healthcare professionals from all disciplines needing pain education and sponsored by multiple organizations. The intent will be to provide a syllabus of practical clinical education on pain mechanisms, best treatment options, frontiers in research with direct clinical implications, and the opportunity to develop coherent strategies for the problems faced daily by many clinicians in America.

Beginning October 3, clinicians will be able to register for PAINWeek 2007. An early-bird registration fee of $299 will permit attendees to attend the entirety of PAINWeek. Attendees will be permitted to participate in the majority of offerings and use their "registration passport" to tailor their education around their immediate practice needs. The anchor course -- the PAINWeek general session and its curriculum -- is intended for primary care/frontline providers and will run Thursday, September 6, through Sunday, September 9. The American Society of Pain Educators will concurrently convene the Pain Educators Forum, a second level for those training to be healthcare educators in pain (Pain Educators) during that same time period.

PAINWeek 2007

PAINWeek 2007 is a national conference during September Pain Awareness Month providing relevant, real-world education for the frontline practitioner who treats patients in pain. The conference will be convened at the Red Rock Casino, Resort, and Spa in Las Vegas, NV, September 6-9, 2007, and will run concurrently with the ASPE Pain Educators Forum. The mix of plenary and breakout sessions will provide patient and practice management strategies for practitioners in the primary care setting.

"The idea of PAINWeek is to have multiple organizations come together along with the ASPE to help address the need for pain education in the primary care setting," said Dr. Cole. Both pain-focused and non-pain-focused physician, nurse and nurse practitioner, pharmacist, and physician assistant organizations are welcome to participate. "Through jointly partnering on select sessions or by running specific educational tracks, each organization can play a part in improving pain management through education," Dr. Cole said. "If patients are to receive the pain management they deserve, all primary care providers need skills in pain care. PAINWeek brings quality education on pain to the grassroots level, where most patients seek care," concluded Dr. McCarberg.
