It's Flu Season. Time to Get Your Influenza or Flu Vaccination!

Posted on: Friday, 6 October 2006, 12:00 CDT

NEW YORK, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- STORY SUMMARY:

THE FOLLOWING ACTUALITIES ARE PROVIDED BY THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION.

DR. BONNIE M. WORD, CHIEF OF THE INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND TRAVEL MEDICINE CLINICS AND CO-CHIEF OF THE ORTHOPEDIC INFECTIONS CLINIC AT TEXAS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN HOUSTON:

"Each year in the United States, an average of 36,000 people die due to complications from influenza. In addition, 200,000 people are hospitalized directly as a complication from influenza. Blacks 65 years of age and older lag behind their white counterparts in terms of receiving influenza vaccine by almost 22 percent. CDC is working hard to try to narrow that gap, and one of the ways they're doing it is by encouraging people in this group to get immunized. The best way to protect yourself, and your loved ones, is to be vaccinated. The flu vaccine is safe and effective and most importantly, it cannot give you the flu. Protect yourself, protect your loved ones. Get your flu vaccine."

FOR MORE, VISIT CDC.GOV/FLU. Influenza (or Flu) Facts * Influenza is unpredictable and contagious. * The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.
