NEW YORK, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- STORY SUMMARY:
THE FOLLOWING ACTUALITIES ARE PROVIDED BY THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION.
DR. BONNIE M. WORD, CHIEF OF THE INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND TRAVEL MEDICINE CLINICS AND CO-CHIEF OF THE ORTHOPEDIC INFECTIONS CLINIC AT TEXAS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN HOUSTON:
"Each year in the United States, an average of 36,000 people die due to complications from influenza. In addition, 200,000 people are hospitalized directly as a complication from influenza. Blacks 65 years of age and older lag behind their white counterparts in terms of receiving influenza vaccine by almost 22 percent. CDC is working hard to try to narrow that gap, and one of the ways they're doing it is by encouraging people in this group to get immunized. The best way to protect yourself, and your loved ones, is to be vaccinated. The flu vaccine is safe and effective and most importantly, it cannot give you the flu. Protect yourself, protect your loved ones. Get your flu vaccine."

Every year in the United States, on average, 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu. * When there is a good match between the vaccine and circulating influenza viruses, the flu vaccine prevents illness in about 70%-90% of healthy adults under 65 years of age. * Flu vaccines are safe, effective, and cannot give you influenza.
