Edmonton Soldier Who Lost Both Legs in Suicide Bombing Helps Other Amputees

Posted on: Tuesday, 10 October 2006, 15:00 CDT

EDMONTON (CP) - A soldier who lost both his legs after a suicide bombing in Afghanistan last January is trying to help others who've lost limbs.

Master Cpl. Paul Franklin endured months of surgery and rehabilitation after returning to his home in Edmonton.

During the intense rehabilitation, which included learning to use prosthetic legs, he realized others at the city's Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital thought they should be helping more people such as him.

Franklin has formed a group called the Northern Alberta Amputee Program to help improve the quality of life for amputees.

He says the non-profit agency will be able to promote research, educate health-care providers, patients and families and evaluate new technologies for amputees.

Franklin says the agency will help amputees in central and northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, northeastern B.C. and even patients from the Arctic.
