FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The bodies of four people, two of them children, were found along Florida's Turnpike on Friday morning near Fort Pierce, authorities said.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers got a call shortly before 8 a.m. from someone who had spotted the bodies of a man, woman, boy and girl on the southbound shoulder of the highway, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
The bodies were several miles from the nearest rest stop, and no vehicle was found nearby, the sheriff's office said.
No additional information was immediately released. An FHP spokesman referred calls to the sheriff's office.
Florida's Turnpike is the main toll road connecting the Miami area with cities along the Atlantic Coast to Fort Pierce and then inland to Orlando and Interstate 75.
