Colon-Tested Patients Cancer-Free at 5 Yrs

Posted on: Monday, 23 October 2006, 12:01 CDT

People who have a colonoscopy have a very low risk of getting a potential form of colon cancer, U.S. researchers say.

A study at Indiana University found a miniscule risk of colon cancer if a colonoscopy five years earlier detected no precancerous growths.

The research team said the findings support the current 10-year re-screening recommendations developed by the American College of Gastroenterology.

The study -- sponsored by Eli Lilly -- focused on 2,436 patients who had no precancerous growths identified through their initial screening, with 1,256 of those patients returning for screening about five years later.

Of the re-tested patients, no cancers were found, polyps larger than 1 centimeter were found in 16 percent of those retested, and advanced adenomas were identified in 1.2 percent of patients.

The researchers also saw that men in the study were more likely to have polyps at all, and to have advanced adenomas, compared to their female counterparts.

The results of the study were presented at the 71st Annual Scientific meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.
