A Consumer's Guide to Mental Health Services: Licensed Psychologist Shares Advice for Informed Decisions in New Book
Posted on: Monday, 23 October 2006, 15:01 CDT
BRIGHTON, Mich., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Author Joseph Bono, Ph.D., P.C., gives readers an inside look at the field of mental health care for consumers in his new book, "Caveat Emptor, Let the Buyer Beware: A Consumer's Guide to Mental Health Services" (now available through AuthorHouse).
Packed with advice and information from cover to cover, Bono's book allows people to make informed choices about mental health care and take an active role in their own care. Bono answers the questions that beginners may have. "In a nutshell, the book consists of 10 chapters that contain information about why therapy does and doesn't work, who needs it, who the professionals are and how the business is conducted," Bono says.
In addition to offering alternative treatment options for readers who decide that therapy isn't for them and explaining the differences between psychoanalysts, psychiatrists and psychologists, Bono also describes various treatment options and processes to prepare readers for the experience of professional treatment, including inpatient and outpatient treatments and substance abuse treatment programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and moderation management.
Finally, "Caveat Emptor, Let the Buyer Beware" can serve as a vital reference for the financial side of mental health care. Professional treatment can be very expensive, but Bono assists readers in navigating the business side of the field with advice on insurance coverage.
Bono says the book makes it easier for beginners to make educated decisions and avoid the complications and consequences that can arise from making the wrong decisions when it comes to mental health. "Struck by how naive and vulnerable many people are when in need of professional mental health care, [I] felt compelled to create a simple reference guide for the average person in sudden need of professional help," Bono says.
Bono is a licensed psychologist in the state of Michigan. He has nearly 30 years of professional experience, including several years in private practice assisting adults, adolescents, families and couples. He has worked in both academic and hospital settings, and spent 18 years as a consulting psychologist for Wolverine Human Services. Bono also served as chairman of the board of directors for Crisis Action Listening Line, a suicide prevention service formerly based in Monroe, Mich. He also works as a guest speaker for church, corporate and hospital groups. "Caveat Emptor, Let the Buyer Beware" is his first book.
