Women Want Universal Health Insurance

When it comes to health advances, U.S. women want universal health coverage instead of a cure for a disease, a survey finds.

The survey of more than 1,100 women asked which medical technology or advancement(s) would you most like to see become a reality; 15 percent chose universal health coverage, 14 percent want a cure for neurological diseases, 13 percent want a cure for breast cancer, 12 percent a vaccine for HIV/AIDS and 8 percent a cure for diabetes.

Women are deeply concerned about health coverage for themselves and their families, said Audrey Sheppard, president of the National Women’s Health Resource Center. As the family health manager, women want the best possible medical care for their loved ones and are telling us in this survey that above all, they believe that making quality healthcare accessible to everyone is a major necessity.

Sixty-three percent of the women say they were clinically overweight or obese.

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being excellent and 1 being very poor, 72 percent of women rated their mental health to be an 8 or above, and about half rated their physical health an 8 or above.
