American Diabetes Association Launches New National Initiative 'I Decide to Fight Diabetes' As Part of American Diabetes Month

Posted on: Wednesday, 1 November 2006, 09:00 CST

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Diabetes Association (ADA) announced today its newest initiative, I Decide to Fight Diabetes, as part of American Diabetes Month that officially begins today.

The I Decide to Fight Diabetes campaign is a new opportunity to support the mission of ADA - to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The signature item of the I Decide to Fight Diabetes campaign will be a new "I Decide" charm that can be worn on a keychain, necklace or bracelet.

The ADA announced that the "I Decide" charm can be purchased by visiting http://www.diabetes.org/IDecide or by calling 1.877.ADA.ID26.

In addition, the I Decide to Fight Diabetes campaign encourages people to become champions in the cause against diabetes and demonstrate their commitment to actively promoting healthier lifestyle behaviors that will help them manage and control type 1 diabetes, and prevent and control type 2 diabetes in themselves and their loved ones. I Decide to Fight Diabetes empowers them to stand together in the fight against diabetes, become a champion in the fight and display to the world their commitment to win the fight.

I Decide to Fight Diabetes will rally the support of thousands of people displaying their commitment to the fight against diabetes by wearing the "I Decide" charm. In the spring of 2007, a second phase of the campaign will give people the opportunity to personalize the "I Decide" logo and transfer it to a variety of products like coffee mugs and tee shirts.

"As diabetes continues to climb at alarming rates, the number of people affected is astonishing," said Larry C. Deeb, MD, President, Medicine & Science, American Diabetes Association. "So many people share the American Diabetes Association's passion for finding a cure and improving the lives of all people affected by diabetes - whether they are at risk for developing diabetes, have been diagnosed with the disease, are a caregiver for someone with diabetes, or simply appreciate the urgency to stem the tide of diabetes in our country. I Decide to Fight Diabetes is a rallying cry to stand for something more, to stand for more than the deteriorating health status of our citizens."

Throughout American Diabetes Month and beyond, this exciting new initiative will offer people a unique way to validate and visibly display their commitment to fight diabetes while bringing us closer to finding a cure.

American Diabetes Month is recognized each November and strives to increase awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and its complications. There are nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States with diabetes. If present trends continue, it is estimated that one in three Americans - and one in two minorities - born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

With the launch of I Decide to Fight Diabetes, individuals are encouraged to consider the impact that diabetes has had on their lives and the lives of loved ones. To demonstrate their support, they can visit http://www.diabetes.org/IDecide to order their "I Decide" charm.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation's premier voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research, information and advocacy. The Association's mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
