Life-Saving Lung Cancer Screening at Westside Medical Imaging

Posted on: Friday, 3 November 2006, 21:00 CST

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Westside Medical Imaging (WMI) has been performing life-saving lung cancer screening exams using their 64-slice cardiac CT scanner since this technology became available in 2004. The recommendation made by WMI physicians to screen patients who are either current or past smokers or exposed to second hand smoke was reinforced by a recent publication in the New England Journal of Medicine reported by The International Early Lung Cancer Action Program Investigators. They performed CT lung scanning in 31,567 asymptomatic men and women who were 40 years of age and older, were at risk for lung cancer because of a history of cigarette smoking, occupational exposure (to asbestos, beryllium, uranium, or radon), or exposure to secondhand smoke without having smoked who underwent baseline CT lung screening. In patients who were identified as having lung cancer by CT lung screening, the 10 year survival was 80%. According to WMI physicians Drs. Norman Lepor and Hooman Madyoon, renowned pioneers in 64 slice CT imaging, CT screening can detect clinical stage I lung cancer in a high proportion of persons at stage I when it is curable by surgery.

The use of routine chest x-ray equipment that is commonly used in physician offices will not allow for the early detection of lung cancer and therefore it is much less likely to be curable. In the United States at present, annually approximately 173,000 persons are diagnosed with lung cancer and 164,000 deaths are attributed to this disease, so that approximately 95% of those who are diagnosed with lung cancer die from it.

Westside Medical Imaging has developed proprietary CT imaging protocols allowing for 3-dimensional imaging of the lung structures to enhance the ability to find these malignancies. In addition, they are leaders in the use of CT for both cardiac, vascular and applications including virtual colonoscopy. They have been honored by the American Heart Association by being selected to present their findings at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Chicago, Ill.

Westside Medical Imaging located in Beverly Hills, CA was the first outpatient facility to house the Siemens Sensation 64 detector.
