Encorium Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENCO), a leader in the design, development, and management of complex clinical trials and patient registries for many of the world's leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies announced today it will host its First Annual Healthcare Symposium on Wednesday, November 15, 2006. The topic will be "Impact, Prevention and Response to Pandemic Avian Flu: A Discussion with the Experts."
The Symposium will begin at 6:15 pm at The Radnor Hotel in St. Davids, PA, a venue in close proximity to Philadelphia. The program will be immediately preceded by a reception at 5:30 pm. The event will be hosted by Encorium's President and CEO, Kenneth M. Borow, M.D. in cooperation with the Healthy Living Channel.
Dr. Borow commented, "I agree with the conclusions from a recent report published by the Council on Foreign Relations (see link below), which stated that 'the probability of an avian influenza pandemic is high. When it occurs, its impact will potentially be severe in terms of loss of life, global economic disruption, social upheaval and political instability. This would be the first pandemic in the age of globalization. Its spread would be aided by international trade and travel and attempts to mitigate it will be hindered by breakdown in basic medical supplies and services.' It is clear that only with prevention and preparation are we as a society going to be able to cope with the challenges associated with this potential healthcare crisis. Our Symposium has been designed specifically to address the heart of these issues including the potential scope of the problem, the impact of Pandemic Avian Flu on emergency medical services, and the role of the media in conveying and interpreting information about this healthcare crisis and, in the process, saving lives."
The speakers at the event will include:
Dr. Christine Dumas is a medical reporter and author who has reported extensively on episodes of Avian Flu as they have occurred throughout the world. Since 1996, her stories have appeared on NBC News Today and NBC News Weekend Edition Today. Dr. Dumas appears regularly on Weekend Live on Fox News Channel. She has been a frequent guest on Tony Snow's nationally syndicated radio program where she comments on topical issues across medicine and health-related lifestyle choices. She has been featured on both Oprah and The View.
Dr. Rick Bright is an internationally recognized expert on influenza vaccine and antiviral research. He was formerly with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is a frequent advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO). Currently, Dr. Bright is Vice President of Global Influenza Programs at Novavax, Inc., a specialty biopharmaceutical company with an innovative technology platform for influenza and other viral illnesses.
Dr. W. Frank Peacock, Chairman of Emergency Preparedness and Director of Clinical Operations, Department of Emergency Medicine, Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Peacock was recently responsible for overseeing a Pandemic Flu Drill performed at the Cleveland Clinic, a simulation that resulted in eye-opening findings and messages for the future. Dr. Peacock is a nationally recognized authority on the impact of healthcare crises on Emergency Medical Services.
The event is free to senior executives in Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Organizations, government, healthcare providers as well as community and business leaders.
