UPMC Names Chief Communications Officer

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the largest integrated health care enterprise in Pennsylvania and one of the leading nonprofit medical centers in the United States, today announced the appointment of Janilee Johnson to the newly created position of chief communications officer. Previously, Johnson was chief communications officer and corporate vice president of corporate communications and public affairs for Motorola, Inc., based in Schaumburg, Il.
"Ms. Johnson's expertise and experience will be a true asset to UPMC," said UPMC President and CEO Jeffrey Romoff. "She will be a key player in communicating UPMC's role as the economic and health care leader in the region as well as our national and international initiatives."
Johnson will be responsible for developing and implementing UPMC's internal and external communications strategies, advertising and public and media relations activities for UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences.
"UPMC is one of health care's most innovative organizations and I look forward to bringing my corporate experience to further UPMC's mission," Johnson said.
She brings to UPMC extensive experience in all aspects of strategic communications, including communicating with employees, media, shareholders, executives and financial audiences. She also has corporate marketing and advertising, trade show, event management and sports marketing expertise.
In her five years with Motorola, she also was corporate vice president and director of communications and public affairs for its network sector and served as vice president and director of communications and public affairs for its communications enterprise.
Prior to her work at Motorola, Johnson was vice president of public affairs, promotions and advertising for Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) in New Jersey, executive director in the executive communications and information division of NYNEX in New York, and a special assistant and chief speechwriter for U.S. Secretary of Education, T.H. Bell, during the Reagan Administration.
Ms. Johnson earned a bachelor of science degree in organizational communication from Utah State University and is a graduate of the senior executive program in business administration at Columbia University in New York. She is a former member of the board of trustees of the Arthur Page Society and serves with a number of other professional and business organizations.
