Cogent Healthcare Announces New Chief Operating Officer

Posted on: Monday, 20 November 2006, 09:01 CST

Cogent Healthcare announced today the promotion of Dr. Russell Holman to Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Holman has served Cogent as Senior Vice President/National Medical Director, overseeing physician development and all medical operations.

"Rusty is superbly qualified for this position and has been a key leader for our company, as well as the hospital medicine industry," said Gene Fleming, President and CEO of Cogent. "Rusty's responsibilities will now expand from physician development and medical operations to all program operations, including recruiting, training, implementations and the ongoing P/L management for Cogent programs across the country." Reporting directly to Dr. Holman will be four regional management teams, each comprised of a Regional Medical Director and a Regional Operations Vice President.

The company's existing Senior Vice President of Operations will redeploy to a strategic role focusing on product development and reporting directly to the CEO. According to Fleming: "The hospital medicine industry is ever changing and our company is taking a critical look at how we can best serve the wide range of customer requests for 2007 and beyond. This move will allow us to stay focused on delivering value to our customers while leveraging the knowledge of a key executive to help us with new product development for the future."

Dr. Ron Greeno, Chief Medical Officer of Cogent, stated: "Rusty's substantial contributions to Cogent are exactly what I anticipated when first seeking to bring him to our organization. This promotion is an acknowledgment of those contributions and is a tangible expression of our confidence in his ability to lead the teams that deliver our care model. I am personally excited about continuing to create strategies to deliver better hospital care and having a physician COO with hospital medicine experience will maximize our ability to turn those ideas into reality."

Dr. Holman is the President-elect of the Board of Directors for the Society of Hospital Medicine. He is SHM's key liaison to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), serves as Course Director for the SHM Leadership Academies, is founder of the Leadership Development Committee, a member of the Performance and Standards Task Force, and former Treasurer of the Board of Directors. Previously he has served as Course Chair of the 2004 SHM Annual Meeting, as well as numerous other committees in the areas of public policy, education, and communications. In 2002, the society honored him with the SHM Award for Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine.

Prior to Cogent, Dr. Holman was the Medical Director of Hospital Services for HealthPartners Medical Group & Clinics (HPMG&C), part of HealthPartners, Inc. in Minnesota, and also was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Holman founded the HPMG&C hospitalist program in 1997, expanding it to 30 physicians across four hospital sites. He also was the founder and Director of the HealthPartners Fellowship Program in Hospital Medicine.

Dr. Holman received undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Religious Studies followed by his MD degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He trained as a resident and chief resident in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He currently serves on two national editorial boards for medical publications and is co-authoring and editing a comprehensive textbook and electronic decision support tool in hospital medicine.
