WHAT: The highly debated SPORT Study is expected to be released today in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). Researchers, surgeons and patients alike are eager to hear the results of the $13.5-million, NIH-funded study that some have touted as the largest of its kind to date. The study was developed to review outcomes of various treatments common among patients suffering from back pain. WHO: Talk with NYC-based Dr. Jeffrey Goldstein, an investigator in the SPORT trial who can discuss the findings, the benefits and the shortcomings of this study. Dr. Jeffrey Goldstein is an orthopaedic surgeon with advanced training in surgery of the spine. Dr. Goldstein is a member of the NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases Spine Service. He is an attending surgeon at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, NYU Medical Center, NYU Downtown Hospital, and Bellevue Medical Center. Dr. Goldstein is Director of Spine Services at New York University Downtown Hospital. He is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the New York University School of Medicine.
