Huntsville Hospital Selects McKesson for Next-Generation Medical Imaging and Information Capabilities
Posted on: Wednesday, 22 November 2006, 12:01 CST
To address its growing volume and complexity of diagnostic images and to speed care team access to patient information, Huntsville Hospital (Huntsville, Ala.) has selected McKesson's market-leading Horizon Medical Imaging(TM) picture archiving and communication system (PACS). By replacing its legacy PACS from a modality vendor with McKesson's enterprise-wide system, Huntsville expects to improve quality and safety through an "image-enabled" care solution that increases collaboration and information sharing among radiologists, referring physicians, nurses and other caregivers. The 800-bed hospital also expects to significantly increase efficiency by moving more than one million legacy exams to McKesson's PACS, which is designed to facilitate workflow efficiencies for the hospital's radiologists, including fully integrating digital mammography services.
"McKesson's technology has proven its ability to position Imaging Departments for archiving excellence. Moreover, the depth and breadth of knowledge of the Project Management team, in addition to the massive volume of images that are able to be managed daily, made it a clear choice for our hospital," said Nathaniel Richardson, Jr., vice president of Huntsville Hospital. "With Horizon Medical Imaging, we look forward to having a more comprehensive view of the patient that spans not only the images produced, but also the patient information captured in our clinical IT systems -- all with a couple of clicks of a mouse."
According to Rod O'Reilly, vice president and general manager of McKesson's Medical Imaging Group, Huntsville Hospital exemplifies healthcare organizations across North America that are replacing outdated modality-based technology in favor of a comprehensive information technology solution that enables a truly connected care team in support of enhanced patient safety and quality of care. In a 2006 Frost & Sullivan report, replacement PACS contracts represented almost 40 percent of overall PACS contracts revenues in 2005, with a forecast to represent 57 percent of total revenues by 2012.
"We are excited to have been selected by Huntsville Hospital to provide medical imaging solutions throughout their facilities," said O'Reilly. "Like many of our customers seeking a replacement technology, they recognize that Horizon Medical Imaging can strengthen and enhance their ability to carry out the hospital's mission of patient care and service to the community."
Horizon Medical Imaging(TM) is the flagship component of McKesson's medical imaging suite. The system integrates images from multiple modalities with clinical patient data, streamlining radiology department workflow and improving radiologist efficiency. It also provides referring physicians with patient images and diagnosis as part of a complete medical record, promoting improved decision making and helping to ensure patient safety. Horizon Medical Imaging received the top ranking in the KLAS Community Hospital PACS 2006 Report(1), issued this month by KLAS Enterprises, LLC. This is the second straight year that McKesson has received the No. 1 ranking for the community market.
