SELF Magazine Announces 7th Annual List of America's Healthiest Places for Women; Honolulu Is #1!

Posted on: Wednesday, 22 November 2006, 15:00 CST

NEW YORK, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- As if you need another excuse to book that long-overdue Hawaiian vacation, SELF Magazine, the premier well-being lifestyle magazine for women, has named Honolulu, HI the nation's healthiest city for women in its "7th Annual America's Healthiest Places" survey. This is the most comprehensive examination of its kind, distinguished for its broad scope and profound revelations about life-improving health secrets specifically for women in the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S.

Whether your hometown is riding Honolulu's wave of good health or stuck in nutritional-neutral like the Motor City (Detroit brings up the rear as number 100 on the list), SELF will help all American women embark on a journey of health, happiness, and fitness.

"Above all, SELF's annual 'America's Healthiest Places' survey is a celebration of all the inspirational women who are committed to living healthier lifestyles. While we're always excited to see how the number stack up, the real lesson is that HOW you live is more important than WHERE you live," said SELF News Director Sara Austin. "No matter where your hometown ranks, you can change your life for the better and attain your most lofty health and fitness goals. SELF wants to help you along the way by sharing the secrets of America's healthiest places."

SELF's exclusive analysis crunches 6,000 bits of data in nearly 40 categories -- including exercise and eating habits, rates of cancer and depression, and air quality measurements, among many others -- to determine which of the 100 biggest metro areas offer residents the healthiest lifestyle. Furthermore, SELF enlisted an expert panel to help interpret data collected from sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Environmental Protection Agency, and the FBI. Most importantly, SELF spoke with the residents of America's Healthiest Places to discover their healthy-living secrets -- and to pass them on to the magazine's 5.4 million readers across the country!

This year's top five Healthiest Places for Women are: 1. Honolulu, HI 2. Portland, ME 3. Nassau-Suffolk counties, NY 4. Orange County, CA 5. Burlington, VT This year's five unhealthiest places for women are: 1. Detroit, MI 2. Cincinnati, OH 3. Oklahoma City, OK 4. Birmingham, AL 5. Indianapolis, IN

With a multitude of outdoor activities, easy access to health care, and an Asian-influenced diet, Honolulu unseats last year's Healthiest Place, Nassau-Suffolk counties, NY. At the other end of the spectrum, Detroit's high unemployment and elevated rates of depression, smoking, and sexually transmitted diseases contributed to its poor ranking.

Among the other categories included in SELF's compilation are Fittest City (Seattle, WA), Healthiest Eaters (Oakland, CA), and Happiest City (Fargo, ND/Moorehead, MN). Where are women most likely to be on a diet? Orange County, CA. Best environment? San Francisco, CA. Smokiest? Las Vegas, NV.

The December issue of SELF Magazine, which features the "7th Annual America's Healthiest Places" rankings, went on sale at newsstands on November 21st.
