Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center Fully Automates Medical Record Workflow With ChartOne

Posted on: Monday, 27 November 2006, 09:01 CST

Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center, a member of the Ascension Health Network, has automated its medical record functions with technology from ChartOne, Inc., the leading provider of on demand medical record solutions. The eWebHealth Suite is a hosted electronic document management system that provides secure access to and flexible workflow for medical records over the Internet. Using this technology, the 179-bed hospital and health center, located in Lewiston, New York, has been able to move paper records off site, reduce labor and other costs, and provide hospital staff with fast, comprehensive and secure access to records.

"The people from ChartOne really understand the health information management discipline," said Marlene Vastola, director of health information management (HIM) for Mount St. Mary's. "We chose them as a partner because we had a great comfort level that they appreciated the issues relating to medical records and would continue to provide us with valuable services."

Mount St. Mary's health information management department now transforms paper records into electronically accessible documents, capturing 500 inpatient charts a month along with 60-90 emergency department records each day. In addition, the organization has already reclaimed valuable physical space by moving paper off site, boosted the HIM staff's productivity and morale, and given physicians the ability to view and sign off on charts wherever they have Internet access, significantly improving their efficiency and satisfaction.

"The ChartOne eWebHealth Suite really represented the optimal mix of value and functionality for our enterprise," said Richard Witkowski, chief information officer for Mount St. Mary's. "As an added bonus, this has been the easiest product installation I have ever experienced. Our physicians tell us that ChartOne is easy to use, and it really speeds the signatures completion process."

Both large and small hospitals across the country have gone paperless using ChartOne's eWebHealth Suite. With the eWebHealth Suite, records are scanned, assessed for image quality and then stored online using ChartVault, ChartOne's secure, hosted repository for electronic medical records. The scanned images are combined with electronic feeds from other hospital information systems to optimally blend paper and electronic record formats into a single electronic legal health record. All information is encrypted before being uploaded to ChartOne's secure data center. Authorized users are then granted secure, simultaneous access to records, and electronic audit trails track each user's access to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.

"We are pleased to have extended ChartOne's existing service relationship with Mount St. Mary's to include ChartOne's technology," said Brian Cahill, CEO of ChartOne. "Applying our full suite of chart management solutions to streamline HIM processes will allow Mount St. Mary's to improve profitability, productivity and end-user satisfaction at the hospital."
