St. David's Community Health Foundation Grants More Than $3 Million to Central Texas Nonprofits

St. David's Community Health Foundation announced today that they are awarding $3 million in grants to 23 Central Texas nonprofits that provide access to health care, education and support to Central Texans.
"It is the Foundation's mission to fund organizations that provide health care services to the uninsured and underinsured in our community," said Dick Moeller, President and CEO of St. David's Community Health Foundation. "St. David's Community Health Foundation thoroughly researches the status of health care in our community, as we work with our partner agencies to improve their ability to provide access to quality care."
Of the 23 nonprofits awarded grants, seven are receiving funding from the Foundation for the first time. The majority of grant awards announced today fund the operating costs of community-based primary health care for all ages offered in clinics including prenatal care, immunization programs and disease management services.
"With 24 percent of the population of Central Texas being uninsured, the safety net clinics are more important than ever before," said C.W. Hetherly, Chairman of the Board of St. David's Health Care System. "The doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers and administrators are working long hours to try to keep up with the demand. We want them to know that they have the continued support of the Foundation."
Also receiving funds are nonprofits that support specific health-related needs, such as the Breast Cancer Resource Center and Children's Hearing Aids of Central Texas, and organizations that help older adults maintain their independence.
"The fastest growing segment of our society is the age group of 85 years and older," said Genie Nyer, the Foundation's Director of Public Health Initiatives. "The Foundation realizes the increasing need for services available to this age group and to their caregivers. Central Texas is fortunate to have wonderful organizations expanding to serve these needs and the Foundation is honored to support them."
One of the grant recipients, Family Eldercare, will use the funding to continue their support services that provide assistance for older adults and those who care for them. "Family Eldercare applauds St. David's Community Health Foundation for investing in programs serving the older adult population," said Karen Langley, Executive Director of Family Eldercare. "This much needed funding allows us to serve more frail adults and their caregivers so that they may live their lives in their own homes and communities."
St. David's Community Health Foundation awards grants twice a year. Mental health grants are announced in May, while physical health grants are announced in December.
The mission of St. David's Community Health Foundation is to improve access to health care for Central Texans. For more information, visit www.sdchf.org.
