Fannie Mae Foundation Donates $30,000 to Send Boys & Girls Clubs' Football Team to the Pop Warner Super Bowl

Posted on: Friday, 1 December 2006, 15:01 CST

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mere hours after the plea was heard on a local television station in Washington, DC, the Fannie Mae Foundation placed a call to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) and immediately gave $30,000 to the Marshall Heights Bisons, a Pop Warner football team. The undefeated team made up of youths aged 13 to 15 was in need of the funds to go to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Orlando, Florida this coming weekend after winning the regional play-offs in New Jersey last weekend.

"We are so appreciative of the Fannie Mae Foundation for stepping up to the plate to help our kids get what they deserve. Going to the Pop Warner Super Bowl is a real honor for our kids. They have worked hard. Not only has the team practiced in 100-degree heat and played in mud up to their ankles, but each team member had to maintain at least a C average in school to play on the team. They deserve this opportunity to go," commented Bisons' Head Coach Jay Ford.

Ford said the team allowed only one touchdown against them all season. The Marshall Heights team won the District championship and then went on to take the eastern regional title against a team from New Jersey last weekend. That won them a spot in the national championships at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The Pop Warner League is a part of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.

"To make it to this point and see them achieve some of their goals is really a blessing," Ford said. The stakes get higher if they make it to Florida and win the series. The final game will be featured on national television.
