Gila, GlobeImmune, UB Health Services, All Select Elemental Security's New Policy-Based System for Network Security

Posted on: Friday, 1 December 2006, 18:01 CST

Elemental Security, Inc. (Elemental), the award-winning pioneer of new technology in enterprise information security, today announced continued market growth from new organizations who selected the ESP solution and accolades from industry thought leaders. Gila Regional Medical Center, in Silver City, New Mexico, The State University of New York at Buffalo, Health Sciences Schools' IT department (UB Health Sciences), and GlobeImmune Inc., all have deployed Elemental Security Platform (ESP) this year in order to address their security, compliance, and risk management challenges.

Elemental's rapid acceptance by client organizations and 21 industry accolades since its launch in 2002 reflect a strong demand for a common-sense approach to security investment that is driven by the business objectives of the organization rather than the "threat du jour." Its Elemental Security Platform (ESP) provides a visionary solution to overcome the challenges caused by point security solutions and multiple regulatory compliance demands, such as Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI, Gramm Leach Bliley and HIPAA.

The winner of a Network World All-Star Award for its implementation of ESP across multiple networks with separate ownership, UB Health Sciences credits ESP with a $20,000 return on investment in its first year of implementation (http://www.networkworld.com/allstar/2006/092506-security-case-studies .html?page=4#buffalo.) Gila Regional Medical Center, considered the medical hub of southwest New Mexico, selected ESP to help automate the extraordinary demands of proving their security posture and compliance in so many areas. "Historically it has taken multiple safeguards to achieve compliance both to regulations and an organization's own policies," noted David Furnas, Chief Information Officer, Gila Regional Medical Center. "The solutions don't often interface well with each other and so it can be a significant challenge to collect and correlate all of the information these safeguards produce and get to the point where you have actionable information. Elemental has filled that compliance gap for us."

"An automated technology solution providing both the security required by regulations and a way to translate the nebulous regulations into actionable policy and technical controls would greatly save organizations time, thereby saving money," noted Rose Ryan, Research Analyst, IDC. "Elemental currently delivers such a solution and we expect new advances from an updated release later this year."

Elemental's unified policy management platform makes the state and activity of users and computers fully transparent, enabling customers to directly translate their business and organizational objectives into specific policies for all users and systems. Using Elemental, security administrators can easily assess the security posture of machines and networks, and make proactive decisions about managing risk.

"ESP allows GlobeImmune to effectively and demonstrably improve our level of security and configuration policy compliance, without increasing staff. We have been able to make great gains for a very reasonable capital investment and operating cost," said Mark Lund, Director of IT, GlobeImmune. "It's proactive, and in real time. Our security of mission critical assets has been greatly improved by implementing Elemental's enforcement functionality."

"Companies ought to consider security as part of business process and policy, aligning governance, compliance, and risk management activities to drive business performance and directly affect business outcomes," said Dan Farmer, CTO, Elemental Security. "This means that companies must meet business needs while doing the best possible job of protecting their networks -- creating high-level security policies that can then be translated into desired security states on each and every affected machine on the network. The idea of optimizing your security policies and procedures is really no different than optimizing your supply chain or your ERP software. It starts with going back to basics and taking a holistic overview of the business, identifying important assets that have critical problems that are likely to occur and then protecting them using risk analysis and sound security best practices."
