AIDS Action Demands That House Act Today to Pass Ryan White Care Act Reauthorization

Posted on: Thursday, 7 December 2006, 15:02 CST

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, Ryan White would have celebrated his 35th birthday if AIDS had not taken his life at 18. The Ryan White Care Act, named in his honor and memory, provides care, treatment, and life saving drugs to over half a million Americans living with HIV. As we speak, time is running out on reauthorization of the Act.

Representative Barton, Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has refused to allow the bill to reach the House floor for a vote. On behalf of half a million Americans living with HIV/AIDS, we demand that the House move forward and pass this critical legislation. The lack of action is shameful and dismissive, given that the bill - which passed in the Senate yesterday - ensures the availability of medications and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS across the country.

The President must use the power of his office and his personal leadership to ensure that the House Leadership acts today to pass this important legislation. The President last Friday in his World AIDS Day speech urged the passage of this bill and has named the Ryan White Care Act reauthorization as one of his major domestic priorities in his last three State of the Union addresses. If President Bush is truly supportive of providing life saving drugs to those living with HIV/AIDS anywhere in the United States, then he will act today to move this critical legislation through the House of Representatives.

Failure to act will threaten the lives of some of our most vulnerable populations.
