Provincial Health Ministers Want Federal Dollars to Meet Wait Time Guarantees

MONCTON, N.B. (CP) - Provincial and territorial health ministers say they need guaranteed funding from Ottawa if they are to meet guaranteed medical wait times.
New Brunswick Health Minister Mike Murphy says while the 2004 accord with the federal government does have funding for studies and benchmarks, there's no funding to actually meet the wait time targets. Nova Scotia's Chris d'Entremont says providing the required equipment and staff could cost his province about $50 million per year.
A report released last month by the Canadian Wait Time Alliance says inadequate data from provinces makes it impossible to know if medical wait times in Canada are being reduced.
D'Entremont says the provinces need to find consensus on the issue if they are to have success with the federal government.
The ministers, who are meeting in Moncton, N.B., today, will be joined by federal Health Minister Tony Clement tomorrow.
