MONTVALE, N.J., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Thomson (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) a leading provider of information to healthcare professionals today announced significant enhancements to PDR.net(R), the company's industry leading medical information portal for prescribers. Taking a strong focus on making broad and deep specialty coverage available through desktop, PDA and email platforms, the enhanced PDR.net will include, by year- end, 19 specialty resource centers that enable physicians to easily access information tailored to their practice needs and medical specialties, helping them to provide safer, better quality care.
In extensive Thomson customer research and usability testing, physicians expressed their demand for continuous access to a single source of authoritative medical information at the point of care as a means to reduce errors. That more than 80 percent of physicians in private practice also are affiliated with a hospital underscores this demand.
PDR.net is the first physician portal to deliver expert-authored disease, diagnosis and treatment information from Micromedex -- a trusted source that also provides the evidence-based medical libraries used in over 86 percent of U.S. hospitals. Condensed versions of these same data sets also are available via PDA-based Thomson Clinical Xpert application, giving practitioners access to the single, authoritative source of medical information they need whether using hospital-based information systems, researching online or using a hand- held device at the point of care.
Each of the 19 specialty resource centers on PDR.net consists of seven to twelve of the most common medical conditions within that specialty. The resource centers include tailored multi-drug interaction checkers, a drug regimen tool, medical news feeds, conference information, monthly practice trends summaries, customizable patient education resources and Xpert Alerts - messages that alert users to relevant clinical trials, as well as new drug and drug treatment information such as new indications and interactions. As always, PDR.net also features the largest online database of FDA-approved pharmaceutical label information from the Physicians' Desk Reference(R), including information on over 4,000 brand-name drugs. The drug information on PDR.net now also includes groupings by drug class within a given medical specialty.
"Physicians told us they want more choices on how to access information," said Kevin Sanborn, executive vice president, Thomson Healthcare. "PDR.net maps authoritative and rich drug and treatment content from Thomson to the way prescribers prefer to access and interact with medical information. PDR.net and Thomson Clinical Xpert give physicians the trusted information they need, when they need it and via the online or handheld technologies that they choose to use."
Members of PDR.net also can download Thomson Clinical Xpert, a free PDA- based medical information application for Palm and Windows-based handhelds, Thomson Clinical Xpert provides physicians and other prescribers important medical information, extensive sets of tools, calculators and drug interaction checkers, and clinical updates at the point of care.
PDR.net resource centers now available include Allergy/Immunology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Diabetes/Endocrinology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, Urology and Women's Health. In the coming months, new resource centers for Gastroenterology, Hematology, Infectious disease, Ophthalmology, HIV/AIDS, Oncology and Orthopedics will be added.
Access to PDR.net and Thomson Clinical Xpert is free to U.S.-based MDs, DOs, dentists, NPs and PAs in full-time patient practice, and to U.S. medical students, residents and other select prescribing allied health professionals. Any healthcare professional with a DEA number can log on to PDR.net to register to become a member and access these powerful medical resources.
