Huntington Park Caregivers Will Hold a Candlelight Vigil to Voice Concerns About Safe Staffing and Employee-Alleged Shortages of Critical Supplies

Posted on: Monday, 11 December 2006, 15:01 CST

HUNTINGTON PARK, Calif., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Elected officials and community leaders will join caregivers from Community & Mission Hospitals for a candlelight vigil calling for an end to short staffing, shortages of critical supplies (employee-alleged), and layoffs.

"Our community deserves better," says Gilbert Zamora, Radiology, Mission Hospital. "They deserve hospitals that ensure the safest and highest standards of patient care."

Ric Loya, Health Commissioner, City of Huntington Park, stated: "I am very concerned about where this hospital is headed. It is important that the hospitals have proper staff and equipment to meet the needs of the community. Both hospitals need to secure quality care for our community by investing in frontline caregivers. Our community must have the same access to healthcare as that which is afforded to the more affluent areas."

In hopes of raising standards for patients and caregivers, healthcare workers have been negotiating a contract with Community & Mission Hospitals of Huntington Park. At a recent negotiations bargaining session, management forwarded a letter to hospital employees about a "Reduction in Force"-hospital layoffs. Loss of jobs, on top of short staffing, could have a devastating impact to both hospitals.

Community & Mission Hospitals of Huntington Park provide vital services to a densely populated region that includes neighboring cities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, and Maywood, among others. Community leaders are keeping a watchful eye on these hospitals.
