St. Louis Cancer & Breast Institute Physician Says Hormone Replacement Therapy Does Indeed Create Breast Cancer Risk

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Diane M. Radford, MD, FACS, a physician and partner with the St. Louis Cancer & Breast Institute says hormone replacement therapy definitely increases breast cancer risk.
Radford, whose clinic has treated thousands of patients, agrees with a study released Thursday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. The study indicated a drop in the number of breast cancer coincides with a decline in hormone replacement use by women.
"These data are confirmation that hormone replacement therapy increases breast cancer risk. The current recommendation for HRT is the smallest possible dose for the shortest possible time, and no longer than five years," Radford said.
"The indication for HRT is hot flashes (vasomotor symptoms). HRT is known to also increase risk of stroke, pulmonary embolism and dementia. Patients on HRT should discuss with their doctors whether the benefits truly outweigh the risks of continued use."
Established in 1999, the St. Louis Cancer & Breast Institute, a cancer treatment center offering medical and integrative services all under one roof, has been named the recipient of the 2006 Fran Lefrak-Brown Illuminator Award by the St. Louis Regional office of the AMC Cancer Research Center.
The Institute provides an integrative team approach to patient care. This enables their widely respected physicians to provide coordinated, multi-disciplinary therapy, beginning with integrated treatment planning through follow-up monitoring in a one-shop type setting. This philosophy also enables the Institute to personalize its focus while meeting the needs of patients and their families.
