Virginia Publishes Nation's First Hospital and Nursing Facility Efficiency Report

RICHMOND, Va., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Virginia Health Information's first of it's kind report on hospital and nursing facilities ranks health care providers on their efficiency and productivity. The 2006 Industry Report provides detailed scores on facility charges, costs, staff time per admission, profits, charity care and other community support. A Service Line report tells how often different surgeries and medical care are provided with average hospital charges, how long patients stayed and how they ranked.
During their 2005 fiscal years Virginia hospitals provided almost 1 billion dollars in charity care to patients, more than triple their 2000 contributions. During the same period hospital profits see-sawed between 3.5 and 7.6%. Last year one in 5 hospitals and 1 in 3 nursing facilities lost money

Michael Lundberg, Virginia Health Information's Executive Director notes that businesses and health insurance companies use the Industry Report when choosing health care providers and negotiating contracts. Consumers may use this information to learn more about how often hospitals perform all types of surgeries including open heart, orthopedic, and neurological surgery. All medical conditions are also reported including those of the lungs, gastroinstestinal system, heart, urology, and delivery of babies.
The Top 5 types of care provided by hospitals are listed below. The Industry Report includes information on all hospital discharges in forty different service lines by hospital.
