Posted on: Tuesday, 19 December 2006, 09:01 CST
Language Access Network (OTC:LANW), a leader in video language interpretation services, announced today that it has entered into a services agreement with Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach, Florida, the only community, not-for-profit hospital in Indian River County, with 335-beds and related facilities spanning over 80 acres. Under this contract the Company will provide live video interpretation services in 150 languages, including American Sign Language (ASL), to the medical center's emergency department. The service, known as Marttitm(My Accessible Real-Time Trusted Interpreter), will be available free to patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
"With Marttitm, our medical staff will be able to treat limited English proficient patients in a faster, culturally sensitive, and cost effective manner," said Greg Gardner, Chief Financial Officer of Indian River Medical Center. "We selected Marttitm because there is a real benefit to the medical professional and the patient in interacting with the interpreter visually and audibly," continued Mr. Gardner.
"Increasingly, forward-thinking hospitals such as Indian River Medical Center are selecting our Marttitm service for its ability to assist limited English proficient and Deaf and hard of hearing patients, in receiving critical healthcare services," said Andrew Panos, President of Language Access Network. "The Vero Beach area, including Orlando, represents a significant marketplace to provide services to individuals in need of important medical services."
Florida ranks fourth nationally for the number of limited English proficient residents. Over 23 percent of Florida's residents speak a language other than English at home. The average Marttitm interpretation in the emergency department lasts approximately 10 minutes, and the hospital not the patient, is billed for only the minutes they use.
All institutions receiving federal money are required though the American Disabilities Act and the Civil Rights Act to provide interpretation services free of charge to Deaf and hard of hearing patients as well as limited English proficient patients. The Marttitm system will help Indian River Memorial Hospital comply with all ADA, JACHO, and HIPAA regulations.
