T. Boone Pickens Launches Charitable Foundation; Dallas Businessman Gives $150 Million in 2006, Establishing a Legacy of Giving

Posted on: Friday, 22 December 2006, 12:00 CST

DALLAS, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Oil and gas industry leader and philanthropist T. Boone Pickens announced today a $135 million donation to establish The T. Boone Pickens Foundation. The new foundation will improve lives through grants supporting educational programs, medical research, athletics and corporate wellness, the entrepreneurial process and conservation and wildlife initiatives.

Coupled with about $15 million in 2006 philanthropic giving to-date, Pickens has contributed about $150 million this year to a wide-range of causes, from health and medical research initiatives to local grassroots organizations in North Texas and Oklahoma. Pickens' 2005 donations of $220 million earned him the distinction as America's fifth-largest philanthropist for the year, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

"We've always worked to give back to the community, and this continues that tradition and allows us to move forward with a greater philanthropic focus," Pickens said.

"I feel like I'm starting a new business -- one of the most exciting ventures I've ever launched -- the business of giving and helping. The gifts of this Foundation will be paying dividends and helping people long after we're all gone," Pickens continued.

Pickens will serve as chairman of the Foundation. Longtime associate Ronald D. Bassett is president; attorney Robert L. Stillwell is vice president; and Andrew Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy, is vice president, secretary and treasurer.

Pickens is quickly establishing a legacy of giving: his 2005 gift of $165 million to his alma mater, Oklahoma State University, is the single largest gift for athletics in NCAA history, and the $7 million donation to the American Red Cross in 2005 is the largest individual contribution in the 150- year history of that organization.

In 2006, through the Foundation, and in personal charitable giving earlier in the year, Pickens has contributed to the following causes, among others:

* $6 million to The Wilmer Eye Research Institute at Johns Hopkins University. The gift will help construct a new research and eye care facility for the Institute, which is long-recognized as an international leader in ophthalmology. * $5 million to Texas Woman's University. This gift will help fund construction of TWU's new $32-million T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences-Dallas Center. The state-of-the-art facility will be built at the TWU Parkland location in the heart of Dallas' Southwestern Medical District, and will offer programs in nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, healthcare administration and library science. The TWU Stroke Center also will be housed in the facility. The donation is the largest single gift from an individual to TWU, the largest public university primarily for women in the United States. * $2 million to Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas. The local chapter of the oldest, largest youth-mentoring organizations in the United States is receiving a matching grant for its Campaign for Children in Crisis. * $1.25 million to The Senior Source, Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas, which is recognized throughout Texas and the Southwest for improving the quality of life and promoting the independence of older adults. The Senior Source is one of the few nonprofits addressing a full spectrum of needs of older adults, from the most active senior to the very frail, incapacitated elderly. Through nine distinct programs, the agency supports nursing home residents, provides eldercare counseling, coordinates money management, serves as legal guardian, provides in-home companions, and matches older adults with employment and volunteer opportunities. * $1 million to The Phoenix House, which has been providing substance abuse services in Texas for nearly ten years. The gift will fund the T. Boone Pickens Scholarship Endowment, income from which will pay for residential drug rehab treatment for from six to eight teenagers per year. * $1 million grant to the Admiral Roy F. Hoffmann Foundation. The Foundation helps U.S. veterans wounded in action. Most initial contact with recipients for these awards is by "word of mouth" in federal medical centers. * $1 million to M.D. Anderson to support their ongoing cancer research initiatives, with a particular focus on the early detection, treatment and prevention of cervical cancer. Funds are designated to support Dr. Michele Follen's research and education projects in the Center for Biomedical Engineering. CONTACT: JAY ROSSER 214-265-4165 jay@bpcap.net

T. Boone was instrumental in the defeat of Al Gore. He financed the swiftboat of John Kerry. He then refused to pay the one million he offered if anyone could prove he financed the swiftboat of Mr. Kerry. He voted for McCain/Palin in 2008. Why should I believe what he says now? No thanks......there is a monumental trust problem as far as I'm concerned.

I assign umpires for Collinsville Oklahoma girls softball summer program. The association serves approx. 180 girls from ages 6-16 years. We play games at our high school fields, but they have expressed that they would like us to get our own fields to play on. My fear is that we will wind up with no place for these girls to play. I would appericate any assistance that you could offer us. feel free to email me at mtasaump@gmail.com if you would like any further information on this situation. Thank you for your time.

Hello, My name is Thomas J. Walls and I have developed a system that if fitted on the exterior of a home will prevent it from catching and being destroyed by the event of a wildfire. This system is self sufficient and will work under any conditions. I would love to be instrumental in saving peoples homes and precious keepsakes. If just given a look I\'m sure it will recieve overwelming reviews. The thing that lead me to designing this system was my youngest brother and his family being evacuated from there home in Spring Valley,Ca. 2007. I talked to him during the time he was away from his home and had to listen to the horror in his voice because he did\'nt know if his family would lose their home. I knew then that something had to be done to save homes and property from wildfires. Please just take a look and you can go from there. Please contact me at 215-906-1960 or email me at tigerwalls@yahoo.com.

As a retired chemical engineer with 40 years in the upstream oil business, I feel that The Pickens Plan is generally on the right path, but we need to understand that all fossil fuels, including natural gas, can only be a stop-gap answer to what this country and this planet really need. Development of renewable energy sources are the only answer that can provide stability for our grandchildren. On an unrelated matter, with Mr. Pickens' current donations to Project Hope and to the OSU athletic program, could he not find a way to resolve the problems concerning the future of the OSU Teaching Hospital in Tulsa? This, the largest DO teaching facility in the country seems about to disappear due to funding problems and unresolved issues between the University and the Hospital management company, Ardent Health Services. It would truly be a tragedy to see the hospital turned into a parking lot to bail out the poor municipal planning by the city's current administration.

I live in Shawnee, not far from Mr. Pickens home town of Holdenville. I am president of Saving Pets At Risk. We are a 501c3. We rescue animals and get them vet checked, shots and spay and neutered. We hold garage sales, dinners, anything we can to keep our program going. I know that Mrs. Pickens is an animal lover and was hoping that he might be willing to help us financially, we are certainly not asking for millions , anything we get we are deepy appreciative. I am also a board member of ARC, a new group started by the city of Shawnee, and our dream is to build a large facility next door to the shelter, so that when those animals are to be euthanized, they will move next door to wait for their forever home and not have to die. my email is roberta@shawneeofficesystems.com and my cell phone is 405-323-0203

Hi there, I am President of the Board of Directors for the NORTHEAST LINCOLN COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT in the old township of Avery, Oklahoma just south of Cushing, Oklahoma. We have no town or city that supports our Fire Department and we cover 49 square miles of Lincoln County. I was wanting to know if by chance Mr. Pickens Foundation could help us out a little bit. We have about 20 Firefighters and we just bought them New Bunker Gear and New Scott Air Packs, and are now sending them to First Responder School And Then to Firefighter I School. We are in the process of getting a 30' X 50' X 12" building put up because we are running out of room to park all of our trucks. I though that maybe Mr. Pickens might help us out a little bit, because we only receive money from Grants, Donations and the sale of Fire Cintracts which we sold $9,300.00 this year. But you see we could use your help. Would you PLEASE HELP US a little bit, we are only 26 miles from OSU and we have alot of these Cushing Oil Storage Tanks in our Fire District. Please Help Us Help Others Thank You Mr. Pickens Ronald Lair Board President
