Health Minister Joins Hundreds for Run Down Royal Mile

ANDY Kerr, the health minister, joined hundreds of people who braved heavy rain for the One O’Clock Run down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile yesterday.
The annual event is designed to encourage Scots to get the New Year off on a healthy footing.
Mr Kerr said: “If I can do it, anyone can. I regularly run as a way of keeping fit, but little things like taking the stairs instead of the lift or walking to the local shop can make a huge difference to your general health. People do not need to be sporty to be active and small amounts of activity over the day can add up to a health routine.”
Poor weather meant the cancellation of the Dogmanay, an event which involves teams of Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed and Siberian Huskies pulling three-wheel rigs in a series of races around Holyrood Park. Two other sports events – the Bicycle Triathlon and Kids Duathlon – did go ahead.
