Mayo Clinic Implements RFID for Patient Sample Management

Posted on: Tuesday, 2 January 2007, 12:01 CST

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has installed 3M's radio frequency identification system in its endoscopy surgical suites, in an attempt to enhance the management of patient samples from the collection stage to the pathology laboratory.

Multiple 3M technologies were used in the clinic's five-month pilot project. According to the vendor, the specimen management process, communication of data, and verification of information have all been enhanced as a result of the pilot.

Expansion of the track and trace system within the endoscopy practice will take place in planned, controlled phases. 3M and Mayo Clinic expect this rollout to be completed in early 2007.

"3M's solution benefits our patients by ensuring efficient and accurate transfer of collected specimen data to our pathologists, who ultimately analyze and diagnose these important specimens," said gastrointestinal and liver pathologist Dr Schuyler Sanderson.

The system comprises RFID tags, RFID readers, software applications and system-integration technologies.
