Medical Alumni to Honor Borens, Eye Institute Chief: Black-Tie Affair to Be Jan. 25 at Cowboy Museum; Funds to Aid Research.

Jan. 7–University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren, his wife, Molly Shi Boren, and Dr. David W. Parke II, president and chief executive of the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute, will be recognized for their community and medical service during the OU College of Medicine Alumni Association’s Evening of Excellence on Jan. 25.
The black-tie dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
Proceeds will go to the medical alumni association’s research fund, which has provided $1 million in grants to physicians and researchers at the Oklahoma Health Center.
David and Molly Boren Together and separately, David and Molly Shi Boren are considered a dynamic force for achieving excellence in education and creating an optimal educational environment for OU students in Norman, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, event organizers said.
Boren, who became OU’s 13th president in 1994, has helped raise millions of dollars for student scholarships, OU endowed faculty positions and improvements to the OU campuses.
The College of Medicine campus in Oklahoma City recently had four new buildings built; research funding has soared; scholarship endowments reached $10 million; and there now are 120 endowed faculty positions.
The Borens will receive the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Community Service.
Dr. David W. Parke II Parke is chairman of the OU Department of Ophthalmology and holds the Edward L. Gaylord Endowed Chair.
He is president and chief executive of the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute, considered one of the nation’s largest eye-care clinics devoted to clinical care, research and education in ophthalmology and vision science.
The eye institute in Oklahoma City and OU Department of Ophthalmology have a combined 300 faculty and staff members, and they rank eighth nationally in National Eye Institute research-grant support.
A graduate of Stanford University and the Baylor College of Medicine, Parke completed residency training at Baylor College of Medicine. He then completed two years of fellowship training in diseases and surgery of the retina.
Parke is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has served on the academy’s board of trustees since 2000. He is vice president of the Oklahoma Health Center Foundation and served 10 years on the board of the Presbyterian Health Foundation.
He will receive the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Medical Service.
The evening Evening of Excellence reservations cost $200 per person, or $2,500 for a table of 10.
