MEDIA ADVISORY: Center for Housing Policy to Release Compelling New Housing Findings for Health Care Workers in U.S. Metro Areas

On Wednesday, January 10, 2007, the Center for Housing Policy will release compelling new housing data for America's health care workers as part of a joint announcement with Homes for Working Families. Specifically, the Center will release a groundbreaking new analysis of housing and earnings data for health care workers in more than 200 Metropolitan areas nationwide. The announcement also compares homeownership and rental costs with the earnings of workers in a total of more than 60 key community occupations. Homes for Working Families will release a corresponding new handbook of proven housing policy solutions for state and local leaders in communities around the country. The Center for Housing Policy is the research affiliate of the National Housing Conference.

How Affordable is Your Community? When it comes to the health and vitality of America's communities, affordable housing plays a key role. And where it is lacking, the challenges are formidable. Employers struggle to attract and retain the labor force so vital to their bottom line. Low- to moderate-income families work extended hours, endure long commutes or cut back on basic necessities -- to the detriment of their children.

By comparing the salaries of health care and other workers to the costs of owning and renting a home, the upcoming announcement shows where homes are unaffordable to essential workers. In addition, the announcement focuses on the tools and policies necessary to address these concerns.
