Actor Fox Urges Support of Stem Cell Bill
January 10, 2007
Michael J. Fox sent a letter to all members of the U.S. Congress urging them to relax restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.
Fox, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease and founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for supporting research for Parkinson’s treatments, urged Congress to support the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, the same bill passed last year and vetoed by President Bush.
Fox helped rekindle the stem cell debate by traveling the country during the last election to support candidates who favor expanding federal funding of the research, his spokesman John Rogers said.
But the battle hasn’t been won, Rogers added. There are not yet enough votes in the House to override a presidential veto.
