CAMR Applauds House Passage of Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (H.R. 3)

Posted on: Thursday, 11 January 2007, 18:00 CST

WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Please attribute the following statement to Sean Tipton, president, Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research:

"The Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research thanks the U.S. House of Representatives for passing H.R. 3, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. We are pleased that 253 Representatives -- an increase over last session's 238 votes on the bill -- voted to fund embryonic stem cell research, and provide hope to the 100 million Americans who suffer from cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, spinal cord injuries and other debilitating diseases and disorders.

"I can't imagine a better way to start the new year than to pass such an important bill, especially with such strong bipartisan support, and an increase in votes this time around. This vote is a testament to the strength and promise of embryonic stem cell research and the belief that it should continue with federal funding and oversight. CAMR extends its thanks to the bill's co-sponsors, Congressman Mike Castle (R-DE) and Diana DeGette (D-CO), as well as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for bringing this up for a vote and ensuring that America is heard in this important debate. This vote is also an important step in securing America's leadership position in the fields of science and medicine.

"CAMR supports all forms of research in regenerative medicine and believes that federal policy should allow for funding and oversight of embryonic stem cell research. We look forward to working with the Senate in the next few weeks to achieve the same levels of bipartisan support, and effect federal policy change in this arena."

The Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR) -- the leading pro-cures coalition -- is comprised of nationally recognized patient organizations, universities, scientific societies, foundations, and individuals with life-threatening illnesses and disorders, advocating for the advancement of breakthrough research and technologies in regenerative medicine -- including stem cell research and somatic cell nuclear transfer -- to cure disease and alleviate suffering.
