PROVO — The Utah County Health Department will provide free flu vaccinations Jan. 17 as part of an emergency preparedness drill.

A delay occurred in the flu vaccination shipment this year, resulting in 6,000 surplus doses, said Lance Madigan, public information officer for the county health department.

The department hopes to replicate an emergency situation by distributing the vaccinations for only four hours on one day, according to a statement released yesterday by the department.

Dr. Joseph Miner, health department director, emphasized that it’s not too late in the season to get a flu shot, particularly because, statistically, the largest number of flu outbreaks occur in February.

Vaccinations will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the following locations in Utah County: the Health and Justice Building, 151 S. University Ave., Suite 1600, Provo; American Fork Junior High School, 20 W. 1120 North, American Fork; Orem Senior Friendship Center, 93 N. 400 East, Orem; and Spanish Fork Trails LDS Ward Building, 98 S. Main Street, Spanish Fork.
