Aussie Cancer Patients Told to Avoid Soy

Posted on: Sunday, 14 January 2007, 18:00 CST

New research in Australia has found that a high consumption of soy-based food can be harmful to cancer sufferers.

The New South Wales Cancer Council says while soy foods can slightly lower the risk of contracting breast cancer, latest research shows that high doses of soy can actually stimulate the growth of existing cancer.

A statement by the state council says research also found that soy supplements can interfere with breast cancer treatment.

However, council nutritionist Kathy Chapman told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that having the occasional soy food is not really an issue.

Women who have had breast cancer need to be cautious about the use of supplements that contain a lot of soy or phyto-oestrogens, she said.

They're often recommended to women suffering symptoms of menopause, but they actually interfere with some breast cancer treatments.
