Comprehensive Book for Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients to Receive Komen Award
SEATTLE, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — A group of 25 clinical staff and breast-cancer survivors led by the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance will be honored by the Puget Sound Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation later this month for the third edition of a book they developed for newly diagnosed breast-cancer patients.
Led by Dr. Julie Gralow, an SCCA medical oncologist and associate professor of medical oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, the group that updated Finding Your Way to Wellness will receive the 2007 Komen Community Service Award during the foundation’s annual meeting in Seattle on Jan. 24. Gralow came up with the idea for the book in the mid-90s and marshaled volunteers to write it. She serves as the book’s editor.
“This resource provides valuable information to newly diagnosed breast-cancer survivors and has become an essential, trusted tool for health-care professionals throughout the region,” said Lynn Hagerman, executive director of the Komen Puget Sound Affiliate.
Copies of the latest edition of Finding Your Way to Wellness are expected to be delivered by Jan. 24 from publisher The Mountaineer Books in Seattle. Komen pays for production and distribution.
Finding Your Way to Wellness is provided free of charge to newly diagnosed breast-cancer patients throughout Washington by doctors’ offices and cancer centers. It is also available by calling the Komen office in Seattle at (206) 633-0303.
The book’s 25 chapters provide comprehensive information about breast cancer, including genetics and prevention, screening and diagnosis, dealing with a new diagnosis, treatment options, managing treatment side effects, clinical trials, the role of complementary therapies, follow-up care, and what to expect in the months and years after treatment.
