Strict Quality Control at PMC

January 17, 2007
Repost This

The National University of Ireland (NUI) appoints external examiners from universities in United Kingdom, Ireland, Singapore and Malaysia for examinations at Penang Medical College (PMC).

The external examiners make sure of and maintain international medical standards and fulfil the requirements of the Irish Medical Council (IMC) and the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

The external examiners assess students in the fourth- and final- year examinations in ophthalmology, public health, ENT, legal and forensic medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, general practice, obstetrics and gynaecology, medicine and surgery.

Among the examiners for examinations held last month were Professor Thomas Fahy, from King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine, Institute of Psychiatry London, Professor Kua Ee Heok (National University of Singapore), Professor Kevin Malone (St Vincent Hospital, University College Dublin, UCD), Professor P.C. Wong (National University Hospital, Singapore), Professor Neil McClure (Queen’s University, Belfast), Professor Colm O’Herlihy (UCD), Professor Sir Alan Craft (Royal Victoria Infirmary Newcastle- Upon-Tyne, UK), Professor Denis Gill (Royal College of Surgeon Ireland, RCSI), Professor Chia Yook Chin (University of Malaya) and Professor G. Bury (UCD).

PMC students spend 21/2; or 31/2; years of pre-clinical training in Dublin at either the RCSI or UCD. They have access to laboratories in pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, anatomy and biochemistry.

They are under the supervision of scientists and clinicians.

In September, the first year of the six-year programme will be conducted at PMC. This will reduce the study cost.

When the students return to Penang, they will be attached to hospitals and health clinics for their clinical programme.

They will observe general and tropical illnesses at the Penang General Hospital, which isthe second largest government hospital in the country with 1,200 beds.

They will also spend time in Seberang Jaya Hospital, Penang maternity and psychiatry hospitals.

PMC does not compromise on the quality of education as quality control is maintained by academic professors in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, general practice, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology.

Application for the September/October intake is open and the deadline to submit application is Feb 15. Students can apply with their forecast or actual results using forms, which can be downloaded at http:// www.pmc.edu.my
