LifeCare Hospitals Supports Proposed Legislation to Protect Patient Access to Long Term Acute Care Hospitals

Posted on: Wednesday, 24 January 2007, 15:01 CST

PLANO, Texas, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Lifecare Hospitals today announced its support of bipartisan legislation that would further define the role of long term acute care hospitals (LTACs), limiting healthcare costs and ensuring LTACs serve only the most medically-complex patients.

U.S. Senators Kent Conrad (D-ND) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) recently introduced Senate bill 338 (S. 338) while a similar bill (H.R. 562) was re- introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Phil English (R-PA) and Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-ND). Both bills would establish federally defined certification criteria for LTAC hospitals and create clinical parameters patients must meet in order to be admitted to these facilities.

"We applaud the common-sense approach behind both of these bills and look forward to working with other members of the healthcare community to support their passage," said LifeCare Holdings Chairman and CEO W. Earl Reed, III. "LTAC hospitals provide a vital service to critically ill patients who cannot succeed in other medical or rehabilitation environments.

Establishing universal guidelines will help determine that care is delivered in the most appropriate and cost-effective setting, and will help ensure that long term acute care hospitals continue to have a place in our country's healthcare continuum."

LifeCare, based in Plano, Texas, operates 20 long term acute care hospitals located in nine states. Long term acute care hospitals specialize in the treatment of medically complex patients who typically require extended hospitalization.
