SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- New Life Centers announced today that Dr. Anne Marie O'Melia, M.S., M.D., has accepted the position as medical director of New Life Centers, a national eating disorders treatment program. She will be responsible for direct clinical care and clinical program oversight of New Life Center's inpatient, residential, partial hospital and intensive outpatient programs. Dr. O'Melia is a triple-board certified physician, with certifications in Pediatrics, General Psychiatry and a subspecialty certification in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
O'Melia has been serving as medical director for Primary Children's Medical Center Psychiatry Consult Liaison Service (Salt Lake City) where she directs a team of physicians who consult on medically complicated patients in an acute care setting. Prior to this appointment she served as medical director of the Eating Disorder Program at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute in Salt Lake City, and prior to that was the medical director of the Neuropsychiatric Institute's Youth Services program.
Serving as an educator, O'Melia teaches medical students and residents at the University of Utah School of Medicine and is a 2005 Teaching Scholar in the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She participates as a faculty member in the Harvard-Macy Program for physician educators.
"As a national center of excellence in the treatment of eating disorders, Dr. O'Melia will become pivotal to our program," says Alyson Harding, Executive Director of New Life Centers. "We are extremely fortunate to have someone of her caliber and national reputation join our program." Clinical Director, Sue Conner, PhD, expresses the excitement of the staff, "Dr. O'Melia is a dedicated and compassionate physician with many years experience treating complex eating disorders cases. Our patients will benefit from our care and our team will benefit from her leadership."
In joining New Life Centers, Dr. O'Melia looks forward to working with a team that uses evidence-based practices to ensure optimum care. "I'm delighted to be affiliated with a program dedicated to delivering the highest standards of care to this population. The need for education and prevention of eating disorders is clear," remarks O'Melia. "As many as ten million females and one million males struggle with anorexia and bulimia. The mortality rate of these illnesses remains among the highest of all psychiatric illnesses and yet most individuals receive inadequate care."
Addressing the misconceptions about cause and treatment, O'Melia emphasizes, "We have ever-increasing information about the biological basis of eating disorders and we are continuously adapting our treatment strategies to this new understanding."
