WCCCD's Continuing Education Division Announces Exciting Upcoming Community Programs

DETROIT, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of people are expected to attend community programs and special events offered by Wayne County Community College District's (WCCCD) Continuing Education Division. WCCCD's Passport to Africa, the Annual Community Health Fair, a Romance Writing Workshop and a Figure Skating Instructional Exhibition reflect the wide range of educational options offered by the District.
All of the events, except the skating lessons, are open to the public and are offered free of charge.
Passport to Africa: WCCCD, in partnership with Detroit Public Schools, presents Passport to Africa Saturday, January 27, 2007 from 10:00am to 4:30pm at WCCCD's Downtown Campus. Participants of all ages of will take a virtual tour of the different cultures, tribes, languages, and countries of Africa. An African marketplace will be set up with vendors from the different regions selling food, art and goods. The goal of the event is to provide education and cultural enrichment to WCCCD students, area elementary and high school students, and community residents about the history, countries, cultures and diversity of Africa. The event is offered at no cost and is open to the public. The Downtown Campus is located at 1001 W. Fort St. in Detroit.
Learn to Skate: WCCCD will present this figure skating instructional exhibition on Saturday, January 27, 2007 from 1:00pm to 2:20pm at the Mike Modano Ice Arena at 6210 Wildwood, Westland, MI. The one-day event offers WCCCD students and local community members the chance to celebrate the U.S. Figure Skating's National Skating Week with an exhibition of local talent, instructional workshops (with hockey and figure skate rental provided by Mike Modano Arena). The National Skate Week is a series to promote ice-skating as a family recreation and figure skating at the national and local level. Certified "Learn to Skate" Ice Arena Pro Staff will provide instruction and the event is free to the first 150 persons registered. Five week "Learn to Skate classes will be offered at Campus Martius in Detroit starting January 30 thru March 1, 2007. Registration will take place at any WCCCD Campus at a cost of $35.00.
Romance Writer's Workshop: WCCCD in partnership with the Educational Affairs Department presents author Karen White-Owens for a romance writer's workshop and book signing, February 3, 2007 from 10:00am to 3:00pm at WCCCD's Eastern Campus.
The objective is to explore the art of writing, specifically in the romance genre and how African-Americans play a role and became involved in the arts. Karen White-Owens is the author of six romance novels and one novella. Her 2004 novel, Circles of Love received a 4-1/2 gold star review from Romantic Times Book Club, the highest honor an author can receive and was nominated "Best Multicultural Novel" for 2004. Annual Community Health Fair: WCCCD in partnership with CVS Pharmacy and Fox 2 present the 2007 Annual Community Health Fair, Saturday, February 3rd from 10:00am to 3:00pm at WCCCD's Eastern Campus. Fox 2 Anchor Fanchon Stinger will host the annual community health fair and will highlight new nutrition and exercise trends for the New Year. The program is a community/education initiative for people of all ages to learn more about their health through exercise, nutrition education and planning. The health fair will provide diagnostic screenings, immunizations, exercise programs and information and training on nutrition, mental health and parenting.
