China Medical Technologies, Inc. (the "Company") (Nasdaq: CMED), a leading China-based medical device company that develops, manufactures and markets high intensity focused ultrasound ("HIFU") tumor therapy systems and advanced in-vitro diagnostic systems, today announced that it will participate in the 46th Japan Imaging Diagnosis Symposium on the Digestive System (the "Symposium"), which will be held at Tokyo Medical University on February 10, 2007. China Medical previously announced its intention to enter the Japanese market with its HIFU tumor therapy systems through a strategic partnership with Century Medical, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Itochu Corporation (TSE: 8001).
Dr. Joo Ha Hwang, M.D., Ph.D. of the Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington will give a presentation on the development of HIFU technology in tumor treatment applications and will review the results of clinical studies using China Medical's HIFU tumor therapy system in China. He will also provide a preclinical evaluation of the device by investigators at the University of Washington. A live demonstration of the Company's HIFU tumor therapy system will be provided at the Symposium.
China Medical intends to apply for an Investigative Device Exemption from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration based on preclinical testing conducted at the University of Washington using the Company's HIFU tumor therapy system on pancreatic tumors. As the principal investigator for China Medical's U.S. clinical studies, Dr. Hwang has extensive clinical experience in gastroenterology with his research focused on HIFU technologies.
