Eskaton Senior Community to Host Brain Fitness System

Posted on: Wednesday, 31 January 2007, 18:01 CST

Eskaton Thomas Jefferson Manor is the site for the test for the new [m]Power Brain Fitness System designed to help older adults exercise their brains and stay mentally sharp. The system, developed by Dakim, Inc., combines fun with rigorous mental exercise, focusing on six different brain functions: long and short-term memory, critical thinking, computation, visio-spacial orientation and language.

What makes this particular memory system unique is the emphasis on fun, simplicity and affirmation. The computer is designed with a touch screen, no mouse or keyboard, and "pings" the different parts of a participant's brain with entertaining exercises, using age-appropriate multimedia. Old movie and TV clips, songs from the 30s and 40s and familiar works of art are incorporated in the stimulating mental activities. When they get a correct answer, participants are encouraged with statements such as "Can't get anything past you today."

Dan Michel, founder of Dakim, has designed the program to be entertaining, so that participation in the mental exercise program will be sustained. "It may feel like a game, bit it's really a rigorous workout for your brain." A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine linked a 63% decreased risk of dementia to frequent participation in stimulating mental activities.

The system recognizes users automatically as soon as they touch the screen, greets them by name and adjusts for ability levels ranging from active seniors to early-stage dementia. Content is updated automatically every 24 to 48 hours to ensure that users don't see the same activity twice.

Residents of Thomas Jefferson Manor are excited about the opportunity to maintain and possibly enhance their mental capacity. As she enjoyed a game of "Famous People Little Known Facts," Marie Peters declared, "I like it because I do what I can do without feeling stupid. It can be challenging, and, oh yes, fun too!"

Eskaton is a nonprofit provider of senior residences and services throughout northern California. Eskaton Jefferson Manor offers 104 affordable housing apartments for independent seniors, located at 5959 66th Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95823.
