James McManus teaches at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. But it is his books, such as “Positively Fifth Street,” that have won him attention from a national audience.

This week, Milwaukee-area audiences will get a chance to hear him discuss one of his more relevant books, “Physical,” which is now out in paperback. The book is a clear-eyed, sometimes hilarious exposition of McManus’ journey through a three-day executive checkup at the Mayo Clinic and his confrontation of mortality. His concern over his genetic odds is deepened by the Bush administration’s stand on stem cell research, which could help his 29-year-old daughter, Bridget, who has had juvenile diabetes since the age of 4.

McManus’ other work includes four novels. He also writes the poker column for The New York Times, and received the Peter Lisagor Award for sports journalism in 2001.
